Its has been quite the past few months. The juggle between a full-time job, college & my side business has been exhausting. I’ve been meaning to blog again and give my site a much needed facelift.
The previous content was all material I used for 1 of my college courses in Mutlimedia, which helped guide me through the this new world of blogging & even twitter. Yes, I know I’m 24 years old how could I not have had 1 before now? Well I wanted to be off the grid. But now I’m back!!
This is going to be the beginning to a whole new site, no filters, full of my thoughts, rants (maybe not) and a look into my world. I hope you embark this journey with me in creating The Power of She blog the place for women (& men) to enjoy themselves.
What do you get when you combine Goodwill, Ebay and Instagram? Well that gives birth to the leading marketplace to buy or sell fashion that is worth over $47.2 million in outside capital. Let me introduce you to Poshmark.
Developed by founder and C.E.O Manish Chandra, the idea was to create a virtual mobile marketplace directed towards women’s fashion, where new or second hand items can be exchanged or sold between Poshmark users.
Poshmark officially launched back in 2011, after raising $3.5 million in Series A funding from investors such as SoftTech VC, Mayfield fund, Inventus Capital Partners, and SC Angel.
In 2012 Poshmark put in motion a mobile app for iOS. After some success the mobile application caught the interest of additional investors, including celebrities Rachel Zoe and Ashton Kutcher. An additional $12 million was received in venture capital as a result.
Within the last year Poshmark expanded the app, making it available to the android marketplace. The company’s focus on a mobile approach contributed to a user base that is now at 90%. It is reported that Poshmark sellers upload over $2 million of new inventory on a daily basis.
In 2015 Poshmark raised $25 million in venture capital catapulting it as a heavy weight contender, with the likes of The Real Real, a high-end luxury consignment, for the top division in apparel apps.
Poshmark can be simplified to a community of buyers and sellers whose main interest is fashion. How easy is it to become Poshmark user? Simple all you need is a phone.
Once a profile is created the user can search an inventory of over 10 million items that are up for sale. With such an overwhelming inventory, Poshmark created a search filter designed to fit the users preferences and sizes to help navigate through closets.
Resembling to a post on a social media network the user can like, comment on or re-share an item. There is also the option to follow and be followed on Poshmark, making it easy to access the closet of fellow Poshmarkers.
If the buyer is interested in purchasing an item, the buyer can offer, buy, trade,or bundle the item.
Using the Buy Now tab the buyer is brought directly to checkout, where the buyer finalizes the purchase. The offer option allows the buyer to negotiate the price directly with the seller. A trade allows items from the buyers and sellers closet to be exchanged. The option to bundle allows the buyer to purchase multiple items from one closet and get an additional discount on all the merchandise.
The buyer is also responsible for paying shipping and handling.
The buyer is then brought to checkout, where a debit card or credit card is required and the shipping address is verified to complete the transaction.
Once the order is packaged and shipped out, the buyer can then check the status of the order by inputting the tracking number on the United States Postal Service website.
Upon delivery the client has 3 business days to check the inventory and decide if they want to keep the item before the funds are officially released to the seller.
If the client decides not to keep the item, then a case is submitted through Poshmark. Poshmark takes care of the rest and refunds the customer.
Poshmark also takes advantage of persuading its user base to browse, buy, and sell simultaneously by offering virtual themed events called “posh parties,” that consists of two-hour time slots of constant listings of merchandise.
Poshmark also provides the opportunity for self-entrepreneurs by allowing a platform where they can sell second hand items or become a retail seller.
The seller has control of marketing and advertising of their closets. As well as choosing the selling margin of their merchandise.
Once a seller sells an item(s), Poshmark takes a 20% sellers fee from the total. Poshmark emails the seller a shipping label for the order. The seller is then responsible for packaging and shipping out the order.
Funds aren’t released until the consumer receives the item and approves it. To protect the seller if the client fails to approve the order within 3 business days from the time the order was delivered, funds are released to the seller, without the approval of the client.
The funds are then transferred to the sellers account, under “My Balance”, where the seller can either use the funds to make a purchase from another Poshmark user or the funds can be requested in a form of a check or direct deposit.
Some women have made over $100,000 selling through the app and have started Poshmark-based businesses.
Poshmark is on track to double its revenue this quarter to $200 million in annual sales. With increasing funding, the company is looking to expand to men’s and kid’s wear and take on a global approach.
Google defines new media as a means of mass communication using digital technologies such as the Internet. With the advancement of web-related technology ranging from WordPress to Podcasts, the evolution of new media is truly a work of art still in progress.
In my personal terms new media has a deeper meaning than just a digital form of communication. It is uniting societies across the globe by the usage of interactive digital mediums, such as blogs to online social networks, where platforms are personalized to serve the purpose of common human interest and connection.
Allow me to breakdown the components of new media in my terms and give you some insight in what I believe to be the new stage where the news media is heading. Let me begin simply by analyzing how human connection ties into the functioning mind and how crucial it is for new media.
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the average human attention span in 2015 was recorded at 8.25 seconds, dropping by about a third from 2000 to 2015. Due to the dropping rate in the human attention span over the recent years, drawing an interest or a personal connection, is more critical than ever.
Personal connection means connecting on a personal level to any form of work. Instead of restating the storyline or objectively stating the work’s genre, the reader connects to some aspect within the work and ties it in his/her own life.
Online social media platforms to blogging software all cater to the individuality of the user. Many of these sites provide an endless amount of web layouts for the user. The user then has the freedom to express personal thoughts and the ability to upload any form of content, making such sites personable.
Almost all sites have an open discussion forum at the bottom of each article for the readers to leave feedback on the material or personal opinions on the topic at hand. Creating this open dialogue for the audience gives birth to common human interest and connection. That is how the new media works.
Not only are normal day-to-day people like you and I joining the new revolutionized online world, so are seasoned news publications and networks.
Take The Wall Street Journal, one of the nation’s earliest newspaper publications, for example. The Wall Street Journal has integrated digitalized news as a part of their brand towards the new digital era.
In this engaging interactive video from The Wall Street Journal, it guides the audience with a step-to-step tutorial on how this new interactive technology functions.
The ability to control and navigate the news provides a sense of empowerment, which simply cannot be reproduced on newspaper. Having a new platform with wide variety of video selection also helps target a broader audience, since not every human has the same interest.
In the recent years newspaper is declining in numbers when it comes to traffic and revenue.
This strategic tactic in creating interactive material online for the viewing public has capitulated the news media to another dimension by keeping the continuity of traditional media and showcasing the news in a contemporary and modernized way.
A recent integration of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter with TV broadcasts has been trending in the recent years.
Many on air shows from local and regional news, to late night shows such as Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon are using likes or hashtags to bring in traffic from online to TV and vice versa.
Incorporating online material in traditional forms of media such as TV broadcast to radio helps attract the new generation that is online based with out jeopardizing the loyalty and interest of the older generations.
By effectively combining the two mediums, numbers for cable news and public broadcasting have been able to maintain or show a growth. Take a look at the following research studies done by Pew Research Center that showcase traffic data.

Since the news media is emphasizing presence in the World Wide Web, the news world is slowly making a transition to a new form of media known as multimedia.
In a multimedia news story, texts acts as the bonding adhesive to integrate viewing content that is just as informative as written material such as video, audio, photos and animation.
The use of audio podcasts, video interviews (shot with professional cameras or mobile phones), photos (that can be enhanced with the use of Photoshop), to infographics with data revealing information, are all components to showcase a visually aesthetic multimedia news piece.
Take The New York Times, Snow Fall The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek By John Branch for a prime example of a lengthy multimedia news story.
I believe even with the new transition of multimedia, the ultimate goal is to get rid of text and have everything in video content.
News networks are offering now live streaming news that can be accessible to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Take the BBC News for instance; they have a division that is dedicated to produce news 24 hours of the day.
Video servicings site such as YouTube also provides news material around the clock such as Vice news, that released a news story on China just yesterday.
Not only are news networks focusing on this visual podium so are social networks. Instagram to Snapchat all focus on the sharing of photos and minimal text to communicate with followers and friends. According to Mintel’s 2013 survey, 31% of US adults who use social networks capture video or images specifically so they can share that content online. Emphasizing that pictures really are worth a thousands words in this era.
Facebook and Twitter now allow sharing video content on timelines and tweets. Since the ability to upload video material on Twitter, MIT Technology Review reported, the average length of global tweets declined between 2009 and 2012. Check out this article written by Mintel where Bryant Harland also anticipated this extinction of text back in 2014.
Furthermore, the news world is still progressing into a digitalized era. It will be quite interesting to see the development of the news media over the upcoming years.
This is a closer look into computer graphics course with the man behind the course DGA 101, instructor Brian Murray.
Modern debates about the second amendment, the right to bear arms, have focused on whether it protects a constitutional right of the people, or a right that should only be exercised by government officials.
Over the past few years, gun control laws have been in the spotlight. Controversy sparked after the 2012 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown Conn., that fatally took the lives of 20 students and 6 adult staff members.
With the ongoing presidential election’s, a major focus is gun control. Presidential candidates have made their stance clear on gun control laws. With the actual elections still to take place in 2016, it is uncertain how current laws on gun control will change in the upcoming years.
As for the Constitution State of Connecticut, the state is Castle Doctrine and does not have a stand-your-ground-law.
Connecticut issues state permits to carry pistols and revolvers to both residents and non-residents of the state.
Connecticut pistol permit allows to carry concealed or open.
Applicants for the Connecticut pistol permit must be at least 21-years-old and be a legal resident of the United States. Persons convicted of a felony or any one of 11 misdemeanor offenses detailed in the statute are ineligible to receive a permit.
There are fee’s associated in obtaining a pistol permit for both application and processing. The permit is good for a period of five years with additional renewal fees.
The application may be obtained from a local police department, city /town hall or can be downloaded and printed off of www.ct.gov
Prior to submitting the application a completion of NRA’s “Basic Pistol Course,” a handgun safety course, is required. The applicant will be submitted to fingerprinting, background investigation and a criminal history check.
The issuing authority has eight weeks to review the application and issue an approval or denial.
In the event that an application is denied, the issuing authority must provide a written explanation listing the basis for denial.
A denial may be appealed to the Board of Firearm Permit Examiners as provided under C.G.S. 29-32b, within 90 days after receipt of such refusal.
But what happens in the case that an application is denied without proper notification?
Well that’s what happened to Kevin Dunn, a security supervisor, who had submitted his application a few months ago.
After the completion of the NRA’s “Basic Pistol Course,” Dunn submitted an application for Connecticut’s pistol permit.
Following a few weeks after submitting the application, Dunn hadn’t received any notification on the status of his permit. Dunn went to the local police dept. of his town to seek the status of his application.
Dunn was informed in person that he was denied.
“I’m pro gun,” Dunn said, “I felt the need to exercise my right’s in the constitution.”
Dunn submitted an appeal to the Board of Firearm Permit Examiners in hopes of having his case reviewed.
“The status of my appeal is still pending due to the imperfections of the police dept.”
If approved Dunn plans to use his license to further his career in armed guard security.
To conclude Connecticut’s pistol permit laws in Article I,Section 15 of the Constitution of Connecticut it states “Every citizen has a right to bear arms in defense of himself [or herself] and the state.”

There are over 6,ooo genetic disorders that can be either fatal or severely debilitating. With the birthrate among U.S. Women reported to rise for the first time in seven years, it is important to bring awareness to an issue that affects approximately 12 million Americans.
Did you know there is one particular Genetic Disorder that is only found in females?
It is named after Dr. Henry Turner, who in 1938 published a report describing the disorder and it goes by the name of Turner Syndrome.
Being a millennial, I have experienced the thrill of seeing the media transition from print to digital. Being a part of the generation that is reported to commence a take over in population in 2015, I have a sense of duty in leaving my mark behind.
If there’s anything I have learned in the world of finance is the importance of assets and when to invest. Time is a luxury no one can afford, so it is of the essence to invest your time wisely.
In my opinion the best investment one can make is not in stocks with the highest value in Nasdaq, but to invest in yourself. Happiness is an eternal access of true unlimited capital.
What better investment than an education? Knowledge is the continuous sign of growth and power. It dawned on me that it was time to follow my longing in furthering my education. Graduate with a bachelor’s degree in communication media and find a career in the field I was passionate about.
The other day as I sat in my computer graphic class, my professor, Mr. Murray, began his lection by stating, “Everything begins with a vision and a plan.”
Initially my vision was freelance journalism which seamed to appeal to me. But after the discovery of my knack for editing and the must have of the final word, I knew my purpose served beyond an article or column.
So my research began in the various positions in the communication and media fields. I came across a segment for TED X Talks with Michelle Herrera Mulligan, the editor-in-chief of Cosmo for Latinas.
By the end of the speech an impression on was left on me. I identified with her background and I could envision myself in her position.
That’s when I had an epiphany to become a digital editor. By ultimately being the founding editor in chief for my own publication.
The advantage of being apart of this era is that all that is quite possible with the use of the Internet and social media.
My plan begins in developing my name as a brand. Start to network with those in the industry and readers to gain an audience for my blog, “The Power Of She.” With the help of course of social networks across the world wide web.
An added bonus of blogging is the ability to publish your own material and create your platform. You have the control from the stories, photography, to the content layout on your site. This allows me to exercise the decision-making and editing process of a true digital editor.
Another is the unlimited business ventures you are exposed to with the possibility of making a profit. Blogging has truly become an evolution for self-made entrepreneurs.
With that stated, make “The Power of She Blog” into my full time job. Expand it into business with a staff of my own.
The reality is we don’t always have the control in every situation, because that’s life. But we do have the choice to make a decision in our lives that can change our world.
There is no progression with conformity.
So go out and believe in your ability to accomplish your dream. Just remember. “Everything begins with a vision and a plan.”
